Beaver Road Primary School is situated in the suburban area and dormitory community of Didsbury, on the southern outskirts of Manchester. The school is responsible for 700 children, ranging in age from 3 years old to 11 years old. There are 26 teachers, 28 teaching assistants, together with administrative staff, cooks and cleaners.
Beaver Road is a thriving multicultural school and children come from many different cultural and religious backgrounds, with many speaking two or more languages. Spanish is the school’s second language and is taught from Year 3 (8 year olds) onwards.
Music education is very popular at the school with children playing a number of musical instruments including: flutes, recorders, clarinets, trumpets, violins and cellos and more unusual instruments like balalaika.
There is a Samba Band and all children from 8 years old have the opportunity to learn Indian music. The school also has a very good choir. Children are encouraged to learn more about the wider world and a partnership exists with two schools in Pakistan.
With nearly 700 children on their register and space at a premium, Beaver Road Primary School has made use of every available room in their 1930s building for either teaching or administration purposes. Cloakrooms, once considered a necessity, have been now converted into teaching rooms to cope with the increasing numbers of children at the school. The downside of losing this facility has meant that children’s belongings – coats, hats, scarfs and bags – are placed on pegs in the school corridors.
At their annual fire inspection at the school in October 2012, the inspecting fire officer was concerned that the children’s belongings in the corridors were creating obstructions and posing a trip hazard if the building had to be evacuated quickly. Immediate remedial action was required.
In searching for a solution, David How, the school’s headteacher, considered all options before finding the Link 51 Locker Solution website.
“The Link 51 Lockers site was a good find,” explained Mr How. “I was able to quickly identify the type of locker and the colour scheme that I was after, as well as being able to look at examples of where lockers had been fitted into other schools.”
Link 51 visited the school and prepared designs based on providing half-height two door metal lockers in each of the corridors, running alongside the teaching rooms, in addition to a number of three door lockers for older children. With each child over 4 years old allocated a locker for his/her belongings, the aim was to free corridors of clutter, thereby fully meeting the requirements of the fire inspection report.
Having been unable to secure funding for the lockers from the Local Authority (Manchester City Council), the headteacher took advantage of the Link 51 leasing option and secured a 3-year finance deal through Investec Education, one of the UK’s leading specialist finance providers for the education sector.
A total of 480 lockers were installed, all finished in the school colours of blue and yellow and incorporating sloping tops to prevent debris build up. All the lockers have hasp and staple locks, which enable them to be secured with a padlock, if necessary. At Beaver Road, however, the lock is used without a padlock to simply hold the door shut without locking it.
The lockers are coated with a unique BioCote© protective finish, a silver-based antimicrobial technology that reduces the risks associated with bacterial cross-contamination – a vital consideration in a school environment.
Mr How added, “The children have been very enthusiastic with their lockers. We haven’t had to number them, as each child has instantly taken ownership of his or her locker and loves using them. A great result all round.”
