Ninewells Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe, based on the western edge of Dundee, Scotland. It is internationally renowned for introducing laparoscopic surgery to the UK as well as being a leading centre in developing fields such as the management of cancer, medical genetics and robotic surgery.
Within the UK, it is also a major NHS facility for neurosurgery. The medical school was ranked first in the UK in 2009.
The hospital currently has just under 1,000 acute beds and a 31-bed medical assessment unit. The hospital has two MRI scanners and a CT scanner available, which can be operated 24 hours a day, including weekends. The hospital provides services in accident and emergency, critical care, lung and colorectal cancer, palliative care and most medical and surgical specialties. The hospital has a team of anaesthetists on site 24 hours a day, and there are always at least two registered children’s nurses on duty 24 hours a day in each children’s ward.
The hospital is administered under NHS Tayside and also has nursing and research links with the University of Dundee
In September 2010, a fire broke out in the central female nurses’ changing rooms. The blaze consumed carousels full of uniforms and was contained in the immediate, but fairly expansive, surrounds of the nurses’ changing area. Over 1,500 nurses’ personal lockers and 600 shared uniform lockers were destroyed in the fire.
Link 51 Lockers & Cupboards was tasked to provide a temporary storage solution for the hospital’s 12,000 nurses’ uniforms, while a total refurbishment of the gutted nurses’ changing rooms got underway. To facilitate this, Link 51 supplied hundreds of lockers to accommodate alternative uniform arrangements.
Working with the hospital estates staff, Link 51 Lockers produced CAD designs of the new changing rooms and progressed the £1 million re-fit without delay.
Following specification approval, Link 51 Lockers supplied and installed:
· 500 single-door time share lockers, operated using a token acquired via a wall-mounted dispenser located at the entry to the facility.
· 2,000 personal possession lockers, secured by padlocks.
To prevent the risk of material accumulating, sloping tops are incorporated on locker runs.
The lockers also feature a unique BioCote® protective finish as standard, to help reduce the risks associated with bacterial cross-contamination from surfaces with high contact frequency, such as lockers BioCote®, tested extensively in trials, has been proven to work in hospital environments by reducing levels of bacteria by an average of 99.9%.
“We were highly impressed by the quick response from Link 51 Lockers. To allow the hospital to effectively implement business continuity arrangements, Link 51 Lockers not only quickly furnished us with temporary storage facilities, they progressed the refurbishment of the nurses’ block to a successful conclusion ahead of anticipated completion.”
