The installation at Yardley School and Science College demonstrates how correct product selection combined with effective room design and space allocation provide a solution tailor made to the specific site requirements.
Yardley School and Science College in Birmingham has some 600 locker compartments in a new recently developed building. The new building has seen the school bring two previously split sites onto one location. One of the characteristics of the school’s layout is its wide, spacious corridors and the locker configuration has been designed to complement this.
Located in six blocks which, depending on location offer between 50 to 150 secure compartments, the locker sites can be found on three floors of the school. In each case they have been positioned between the support pillars of the building with only minimal intrusion into the adjacent corridors. This benefited floor space utilisation and is a pattern that our layout designers were able to repeat in each area.
Rhino Heavy Duty Lockers were used throughout the instillation providing enhanced durability. Each locker is four compartments high and students are responsible for their individual locker, opening it with an allocated key supplied against a returnable deposit.
The lockers were fitted with sloping tops to prevent litter accumulation and to make cleaning easier. To minimize scuff damage the lockers were also raised on plinths and to complement the schools under floor heating incorporated steel ventilation holes were added.
This LEA maintained comprehensive school which caters for students up to sixth form entry, now boasts a news building complete with a tailored, stylish and durable locker instillation.
